The War Gazettes

Naval & Military Press published, in December, a DVD of those portions of the London Gazette related to military matters. All British awards, from the Victory Cross to Mentioned in Despatches that were published in the LG. It says 370,000 British awards are listed. Also "tens of thousands of appointments, transfers, promotions and foreign decorations and medals". I have just received my copy. It is expensive at 145 pounds, but they offer it at 20% off until the end of January. VAT is extra in the UK and Europe. I haven't loaded it on my computer yet. More in a day or two when I have.

Enjoy!

Frank.

It would be interesting to learn what advantages the DVD offers over the ability to search the entire LG online for free.

Errol,
For one thing, the data is loaded on your PC (they do not support Macs, or Linex). Which means the search times are much faster. Which also means that you don't need to be on the Internet to use it, which at least for people in England using a BT connection (I don't know about the situation in New Zealand) you are not paying for a telephone connection (and my particular ISP here in the US is terrible). It also looks to me as if they have done a better job of OCRing the pages, so the searches are cleaner. And it looked to me as if they will do automatic updates to the database (as long as you still have the original DVD, to insert in the computer). I haven't played with it much at this point, having several other projects taking up my time.

Enjoy!

Frank.
