Who is who?

My Grandfather, Lt LH Phinney, had a photo which I have now. On the back is says RAF 1 Squadron Lincoln, Oxford.

It also has a list of names on the back, signed presumably by the person in the photo with my Grandfather. As you can see by the back there is no indication who is who. So The only person I can rightfully Identify is my Grandfather in the back row at the end on the right side.

Any help on where the names on the back connect with the photo would be great. Even some of the names are difficult to read.

Thank you
Lori-Kim

Can't help with putting names to faces, but the signatures I've deciphered (these people had no regard for latter-day historians!) are, top to bottom:

Basil Henry Moody – joined No 1 Sqn on 23 April 1918 and claimed nine victories between 27 May and 28 October

Charles W Arning – joined No 1 Sqn on 27 June 1918 and claimed three victories between 15 September and 1 October 1918

Francis Peabody Magoun – joined No 1 Sqn 15 November 1917; wounded 10 April 1918 while flying S.E.5a C9621; awarded the Military Cross, Gazetted 22 June 1918; rejoined the squadron on 9 October; claimed seven victories between 28 February and 28 October 1918

Douglas Evan Cameron – joined No 1 Sqn on 19 June 1918; claimed five victories between 15 September and 28 October 1918

?

David M M?

P Addison - joined No 1 Sqn on 1 October 1918

C R Boyd – joined No 1 Sqn on 9 September 1918; claimed one victory, on 1 October 1918, flying S.E.5a C9065

N W Kirkby

Charles G Pegg – joined No 1 Sqn on 29 June 1918; claimed three victories between 8 August and 15 September 1918

Wallace Alexander Smart – joined No 1 Sqn on 10 April 1918; claimed five victories between 31 May and 29 October 1918

E W M?

Frank C Bowler - joined No 1 Sqn on 2 October 1918

H G Freeman - joined No 1 Sqn on 30 October 1918

Wilfred Ernest Young – served previously with No 19 Sqn (three victories) and No 74 Sqn (eight victories); took command of No 1 Sqn on 4 August 1918 but made no further claims; I would imagine he is the officer seated the front row, sixth from the left

N T Trembath – joined No 1 Sqn on 15 June 1918; claimed two victories; Pow 28 October 1918 while flying S.E.5a D6951

?

?

S W Jarvis

Blatch?

L H Phinney – joined No 1 Sqn on 9 August 1918; one victory on 1 October 1918 while flying S.E.5a D6951

Hope this helps

Given the dates of the pilots assigned, the officer in command, the wetness of the weather and attire of the men and the location, would this have been taken in the spring of 1919 upon return from Germany? Steve

To put the cat amongst the pigeons, according to The S.E.5 File, No 1 Squadron returned to London Colney (Hertfordshire) on 1 March 1919 (from Izel-le-Hameau), upon which date Major Young relinquished command. The squadron formally disbanded on 20 January 1920. That being the case, the annotation "Lincoln College, Oxford" is a bit of a puzzle.

Still working on the name below Cameron. Lori-Kim, this is an amazing photo that is worth no small sum given all the aces signatures and the fame of No. 1 Squadron in British history. Thank you for sharing it with us. Steve

Thank you so much for the information.

Graeme and Steve,

Thank you so much for the info you have provided. I did recognize some of the names from this site and the fact that a few of those in this picture shared a couple of their victories with my Grandfather. But the info is awesome! So Thank you!

Graeme, I originally thought it said Lincoln GO71 or CO71, Oxford lol Didn't even occur to me it would be college lol.

Still want to put a face to the names if there is anyone who can help with that lol. I hope!

If I squint hard enough, I can convince myself that the name is "Touchstone" but that doesn't match his initials which were G R.

If I still smoked, I'd say that this was a three-piper.

lol At least a 3 piper! lol

Almost looks like it starts with a "Y" and the last 4 letters could be "hene" or "lene" but that's a guess lol I used to be good a deciphering handwriting, but out of practice.

I think we need a doctor's receptionist, they're about the only people who can decipher such spidery hand-writing!

Almost looks like it could be a three-part surname, with the middle part being "Le" or "De" and the last "Leng" or such-like.

Time to watch some football on the TV and try again with fresh eyes in the morning.
