Breguet's Crash Files™ http://members.shaw.ca/flyingaces/br.crashfiles/

THE RULES:

1) All aircraft are of the 1914-18 period (Must have left the ground during this period).
2) The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3) All "ACES" with a score of 5.0 or higher must obey the 3.0 hour handicap. All others with a score of ZERO to 4.99 may start immediately, if not sooner! Offenders will be dealt with severely!
4) To be eligible for correct ID an answer should include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in it's identification. 'Should' ecomes 'must' once a score of 25 is reached.
5) And whoever wins this challenge will have to provide a new one! If this can not be done for any reason, please PM Breguet and he will take over as host!
6) If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next challenge. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
7) The final arbitrator of all things to do with the "rules" is Breguet. In cases where the arbitrator's game answer is in question the decision rests with the current leader of the table.

Hmmmm... I'm going to take a stab at this.

1) The streamlined fuselage and shape of the tail surfaces tell me it is a Roland. (LFG)

2) It gets harder from there- the features that would tell you if it is a D.I or D.II are obscured by the "bystanders."

3) The later markings however lead me to believe that it is a D.II

I will therefore say this is a Roland (LFG) D.II.

As an aside, Pfalz built more of these aircraft than did Roland, and that is where Pfalz learned the construction techniques used on their subsequent designs.

Correct, Brad!

According to Jack Herris, this is a Bulgarian Roland D.IIa

I was curious about the ID of this plane, and decided that the lack of the fairing around the base of the tail skid was a point in favor of its being a D.IIa. Ransom

I believe that the lack of tail fairing indicates that it was a Pfalz built aircraft. The primary difference between the II and IIa was the engine.

Last night I googled up a 2004 contribution to this forum by Dan San Abbott in which he said the greater weight of the Argus engine compared to the Mercedes led to the engineering out of over 200 pounds airframe weight in the D.IIa compared to the D.II. Other than the greater number of access panels in the cowling of the D.IIa he didn't mention any specific feature, tho he did say the structure was lightened throughout. Ransom

The information I have seen says the nose is slightly longer due to the longer engine- on the D.IIa.
