Rib stitch tape cover

The time has come to start rib stitching the Bulldog. (or at least some of the parts). The question is: does anyone have ideas or methods to make the frayed tape to cover the stitching with? It is the standard 2 1/2 inch tape with 1/4" fray on each side.
In the past I spent many hours cutting the pink off, (poly-fibre), searching for one straight thread, and after cutting off that fuzz, pulling the threads for a quarter of an inch.
Even the dentist sounds like more fun than this.

Cheers,

Ed
