My grandfather, James E. McGovern, flew for France during WWI, (Foreign Legion Aviation Group). Does anyone know how to find his offical record?

Bill:

It's not actually an official record, but Nordhoff and Hall compiled biographies of American pilots in the Lafayette Flying Corps, published in a multi-volume set. Possibly a major library would have a copy.

Don't have the book yet, but I hear that Wings of Honor by James Sloan has bios on all US airmen in all services. Worth a try. Can anyone review this book for us?

No McGovern listed in WINGS OF HONOR. Checked Lafayette Escadrile, Lafayette Flying Corps and Americans assigned to French units. Also checked listing in rear of book. Sorry
