First To Paint Their Aeroplane

Something I have only just found out, is the von Richthofen started painting parts of his aeroplane as early as January 1917. I thought he started that practice in April 1917.

Which raises the question in my mind........ who were the first pilots (by nation) who started to individually paint their aeroplanes? I guess you can include in that category those pilots who painted individual markings, as opposed to those who splashed colour over their kites.

Although it's the latter that interests me more.

Anyone have any ideas?

The first to splash paint on their machines were probably the men of 'C' Flight, 4 Sq R.F.C. who were assigned to coast patrols after the Expeditionary Force left for France. On 21st August 1914 the patrols were relaxed and they commenced painting a camouflage scheme on their Maurice Farmans.

Interesting. But I'm looking more at an individual's scheme.

Would Navarre have been the first?
