Be2e 1/6th Scale

A few pics from 2015 of my Be2e. After a long hibernation I'm glad to report I'm back at this project. A semi kit from Flying Scale Models, the plans were designed by Roy Scott under the Practical Scale logo back in the late 60s/70s. One-sixth scale with a span of 80". Weight in the 9-10 lb. range probably, I'm using a Saito .80 four-stroke for power. Not much else to report but I'm looking forward to flying it!

Gosh that's going to be sweet. The Saito sounds like a great match. Can you tell us how you plan to finish it? Covering materials, paint, etc.

Hey, glad you like it. I'm going to go with white nylon dyed, as per the original model. It's described in the RCM article from 1971, and I thought I'd give it a go. The dye described is DYLON. I found a source for the nylon from Dharma Trading, five yards x 58" width came to about $25.00. If it doesn't work out I'll just go for Solartex! But at that price I need to try it. Of course it has to be doped, I'm using Randolph nitrate dope to attach it and to fill the weave and then butyrate since it's fuel proof.

The Saito is a veteran of a Spacewalker ARF that last flew in 2004! I need to get it taken in to get things checked out and probably opened up to see if there's any rust.

One reason I'm working on it again is that I've discovered the series from 1977 called Wings, and I'm just loving it! I've heard about it for years but I don't think it was ever on US television like Upstairs, Downstairs. All the Be2cs, and the Albatros C.I, and the Eindeckers, and Sgt. Farmer and Captain Triggers...thank goodness for Youtube. I heard it's been available on DVD for a bit.

Hope to get more pics out soon--

Lyle

Liking this more and more. So you will dye the nylon to make it look like linen, and then dope it on with clear? Would like to know how that works out. Keep us posted.
