Question Re: Question regarding captured aircraft

Hello all,
What happened to any enemy aircraft captured intact? Were they flown and compared agains't allied aircraft way behind the lines, or were any flown over to Farnborough at the RAE Establishment to be evaluated? Are there any records of captured German aircraft that were evaluated? Many thanks, Strutter15

Both sides would evaluate captured aircraft, it was just common practice to see what new innovations the other side had.

Clive Franklyn Collet, who had claimed 12 victories and had received the Military Cross and Bar, was killed on 23 December 1917 while was test-flying a captured German Albatros over the Firth of Forth.

Hi Strutter15,

you are asking for records of captured aircraft by British troops?

Have a look here: http://www.ukserials.com/

Check under 'Misc' for miscellaneous serial codes.
Scroll down to the 'G' section. There are more than 300 captured aircraft listed.

(That letter in the alphanumeric coding for army aircraft was preserved for captured German aircraft in WWI.)

...not all, but several of them were taken to the experimental airfield Martlesham Heath, where the RAF mainly did evaluate foreign and domestic aircraft.

Cheers

Collett was just engaged in some aerobatics at the time of his fatal accident. No test flying involved. He flew the Albatros frequently, having made over 30 flights in the machine between mid-October and November 1917.

The Albatros of course was DV 1162/17 - a Jasta 4 machine captured on 16 Jul 17 (Vfw Clausnitzer pow) and accorded capture serial of G56.

Cheers Russ
