German airman Georg Gunermann

I was looking through the Google images and came upon a photo of a German airman that seems relatively unknown. It lead me to the Out of The Box blog but couldn't find the blog on him.I contacted them and they gratefully found the blog on him.His identity is Georg Gunermann and was hoping more can be found on him.

His name is actually Heinz Gunermann not Georg (German writing). Full name Heinrich Gunermann born in Munich 23 Jan 1899 Joined Bav. Res IR 18 on 15/01/15 aged just 16. By 14/06/16 he was in IR 401 with which unit he was seriously wounded possibly on 09/11/16/(Verlustlisten 1916-11-30). After convalescing with the Prussian Fus Reg 59 he seems to have spent some time in the Bavarian Ersatz Eisenbahn (Railway) Battalion, before finally transferring to the Bavarian Air Service where he served with bayer. Flieger-Ersatz-Abteilung 1.

The rest you know - he died in Czechoslovakia in 1939

Thank you for the information. It seems he had an eventful career and an interesting post-war life that was unfortunately cut short.Good to learn on more individuals

Gunermann

The finding aid for the Gunermann collection at Wright State University indicates that this man was in pilot training in August 1918. Where the first name "Georg" is taken from is not indicated.

One page of his photograph album is reproduced at the blog, and the captions are not in German Schrift. (There are nonetheless a few errors in the transcription of the German.)

I'm wondering whether there are two different men: Heinrich/Heinz Gunermann and Georg Gunermann.

Saxon lions: If you haven't had a chance to look at the finding aid, perhaps you could do so and see whether you think it really is Heinrich? As needed, we should alert the archivist, Lisa Rickey, to this discussion.

best,
--Marian

Gunermann

Lisa Rickey forwarded to me two photos of Gunermann. The first makes clear Saxon Lions was right about a misreading of German Schrift. The second has him identified with first name in easier to read writing.

best,
