Keeping Standing Liquid-Cooled engines from Freezing

During winter, how did they keep the liquid coolant from freezing overnight when the aircraft was not being used?

I read that in 1916 and 1917 at British airfields, the radiators would be drained immediately after the aircraft landed for the day, and frequently the water would be brought to boiling before being poured back into the radiator. I read somewhere that the Germans, who used lots of liquid-cooled engines, would add alcohol to the coolant water.

What's the real story?
