Arrow Just a guess...

.
Hello!

A very nice "noseart" indeed (something new for decal-makers)!

To be honest, both ideas in connection with the origin of this noseart are possible:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hieronymus_Bosch

My guess is, that the "Medusa" probably was better known, since the numerous stories about the ancient Greek heroes were famous in Germany about a century ago. Only for a few people "Hieronymus Bosch" was a household name.

As I already said, it's just a guess...

Actually, I don't think this is a medusa type figure. I think it is supposed to be someone in particular who is holding two snakes at bay. The guys around the airplane seem to be very amused and the face is very large, like a caricature of the period--I would wonder if it was someone in the unit but the long hair would seem to foreclose that. The two snakes bodies wrap behind the figure's head while the snakes heads are held tightly by the figure's hands. The figure's shoulders and arms are very apparent as is one of the hands which is clearly grasping the snake (on that side) just behind its head. The long hair is prominently displayed and was probably intended to make clear to those who saw it just who this was supposed to be.

Maybe it's flying death? Forearms and hands without the muscles and skin. The two snakes symbolize the bomb. We can see in the photo bomber carrying the death ...
