German loss on October 20 1916

Hallo all,

On October 20 1916, a novice German pilot was bluffed into landing Fokker E.I 327/16 at the French aerodrome at Plessis-Belleville.

Is there any German airman recorded as MIA on this date?

Hi Josef

I dont knew knew where Plessis-Belleville is located. But an possible candidate might be Lt Leitlof (P) who was reported missing this day. One source says he lost his way and landed near Paris.

What is the story about that bluff ?

Hallo Gunnar,

Great information! It fits perfectly with the scenario.

Here's hoping I have my facts straight. Le Plessis-Belleville is on the road between Soissons and Paris, a little over half-way. It was used as a training base by the French air service. On Oct 20, Fok. EI 327/16 was spotted flying in the vicinity of Crépy-en-Valois and forced to land on the aerodrome of GDE le Plessis-Belleville by Slt Gustave Laffon, who was flying an unarmed Nieuport. I presume Laffon was already in the air at the time, rather than taking off to intercept the intruder, but I am not sure.

Is Ltn Leitlof's unit known? He was quite a way over the lines, so his fuel situation must have been dire!

Many thanks,
josef

Hi Josef

Leitlof apparently started his flight at Valenciennes. An forerunner to the Jasta Schule have been formed there in early October 1916 around the time that AFP 6 moved away. That probably explain why he was flying an one-seater "training" aircraft.
Agree about the strange scenario. Leitlof was actually no complete novice as he had the FzAbz since 050516. I have his unit as KG 4/23.

I do think that the weather situation was fairly good on 20 October, so maybe he was an deserter as several others ??

Salut Bruno!
Thanks for posting that article!

Gunnar.
More great info — yes perhaps Leitlof did have a motive for his "excursion". Do you recall the source saying he had lost his way and landed near Paris?
