Hans Viebig

Hi all,
There is a Hans Viebig (without d.o.b. and d.o.d.) on the aces section of this forum. It looks as though this is the same man that is mentioned on the following webpages:

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/.../V/ViebigH.htm

http://forum.balsi.de/index.php?topic=1446.60
(near the bottom of the page)

Can anyone confirm if they are one-and-the-same?

Regards,
Matt.

Hi MattiBoy,

Interesting question. I'm not sure, but it seems to me these Viebigs on the pages you mentioned are two different persons. On the page of Lexicon-der-Wehrmacht they talk about a Viebig with 9 victories. And died in 1961. And one that got the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross during WW2. The forum of German military History mentions that 'their' Viebig died in 1982 and was one who got the DKiG, the German Cross in Gold, during WW2. A lower distinction than the Knights Cross.

If i had to make an educated guess which one of them is the one mentioned at our forum, I would say: the one from the Lexikon. Viebig is, as far as I know, not a common name in Germany. And confusion about the number of victories is not unusual. Billy Bishop knows everything about that!!!!

Kind regards

.
I also think that this is the man on the website.

I checked the German telephone book and there are less than 100 entries for the Name "Viebig".

Hans Viebig is listed in the book by Veit Scherzer Ritterkreuzträger 1939-1945. It states that he was born on May 31, 1897 in Berlin, and died on September 30, 1961, in Rheydt. He was also a recipient of the DKiG on September 11, 1944. He received the Ritterkreuz on February 21, 1944, and had the rank of Oberst as Kdr. of GR 258. Which agrees with the two websites, but does not prove that he is the WW1 ace. But it is certainly very suggestive.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. It can be difficult to find anything conclusive out there. At times I have said 'ah, that's him, no doubt about it' only to be proved wrong further down the line...

If it is the same man, then he certainly had a distinguished career the second time around

Given that there is only one German ace named Hans Viebig it would seem likely it is the same person 5 confirmed victories, 4 unconfirmed - also in both biographies he received a war ending wound in 1918
