Bristol M1C "PC12"

Hi All,

I feel more comfortable about asking about colours here than on 'the other WW1 site".

I recently bought the very nice 1/32 Special Hobby Bristol M1C kit and will build the 150 Squadron C4907 version - in "PC12" and light blue (almost certainly roundel blue [ultramarine] tinted with white). I don't have the Datafile on the type, as they seem to be as rare as hens' teeth - at least legal hard copies - and am unsure what the consensus/evidence there is for the colour of the "PC12" as used on these overseas examples.

Was it the chocolate brown version or the reddish 'tropical' paint - possibly over an aluminium undercoat (see one of the previous Methuen-Resene-RGB tables from a few years ago)? The latter colour, ferric-oxide based, is basically the same as the later Dull Roundel Red and red shrinking dope.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers,

GrahamB

sometime in 2009 or 2010 IIRC, there was a thread on PC-10 that discussed PC12 and had a picture of an M1c deemed very accurately done, showing the reddish rather than darker brown hue. it was not nearly as red as a roundel red, though. it reminded me of the color of darker Oklahoma red clay soil-not the light tone, the darker one, like when it is wet, or like the Red River after a rain storm.

Smile Bristol M1C "PC12"

Hi,

many thanks. Yes I think that I'm on the side of the reddish colour now. Looking through my paints there is a series of enamels that are in the group: White Ensign Regia Aeronautica Marrone Mimetico 2, RAF Dull Roundel Red and Italian tank colour Rosso Rugine. The last looks excellent - darker and duller than the other two - but the others could be used for highlighting and modulating.

No doubt there are some acrylics as well and I'll look at these and post up some examples for interest and 'choice'.

Cheers,

GrahamB
