Tabloid Doppelganger
That is an excellent photo of the Schutte-Lanz D.I.
This was a German aircraft that seems to take a lot of cues from the early SS1 Sopwith Tabloids. This view really shows the distinctive shape of the Tabloid fuselage and cockpit. It has warping wings like the early Tabloid, but a balanced rudder without fin (similar to the prototype Tabloid, but not the production models). According to the Bruce Sopwith Pup Book, the Schutte-Lanz D.I had the following specifications:
-wingspan: 24' 7"
-length: 17'8"
-weight 1,499 lb
so, slightly smaller and heavier than a Tabloid.
Interestingly it had two fixed synchronized machine guns (which explains the extra weight).
Where'd you find it?
