Question Re: Aircraft variants

Hi all, Iv'e read recently that MvR preferred the Albatros Dlll to the DV/DVa. What was the difference between the DV, and the DVa version? Were they faster or more manouverable than the Dlll, or did they climb/ fight at a higher altitude? Was there ever a DlV version? Similarly, Iv'e seen that the difference between the Pfalz Dlll/llla was that the guns were " exposed", in order for the pilot to un-jamb any blockages. Were there any other differences? Many thanks Strutter15
