Lothar von Richthofen
Has anyone ever tried to locate Lothars grave ? I know he was buried next to his father as the photo shows in the book Mother of Eagles and i know the headstones were removed when the cemetery was changed to something else but shoudn,t there be a record somewhere of the graves like most cemeteries do ?

Hi Sator.
A long time ago, somewhere in the 90s, I have contacted the local authorities in Schweidnitz/Schwidnica about this.
They told me the archive of the former garrison cemetery was lost during the fighting at the closing days of WW2 when the town was attacked by the Red Army.
I was and I'm still not not convinced by their answer. The town of Schweidnitz was not defended by German troops and felt in Russian hands almost undamaged.

The Russians were notorious for desecrating graves, one of their specialties.

Last I heard - and this was many years ago, but I think it was in a similar discussion on this forum - they had removed all the headstones from the garrison cemetery and covered it with a playing field at some point in time? Could just be hearsay, though.
As far as the headstone in Mother of Eagles, he does have a headstone in memoriam in the Richthofen family plot in Wiesbaden.

Hi Dragon,
The last headstones at the Garnisonsfriedhof were removed in 1973 when the cemetery was turned into a park. The exact location was between the Bahnhofstraße (nowadays ulica Kolejowa), the Waldenburgerstraße (nowadays ulica Walbrzyska) and the Grenadierstraße (nowadays Armii Krajowei).
Regards

Thank you so much! I've wondered for years exactly where that was located, coupled with a healthy dose of self-doubt as to whether or not I even remembered that correctly.
And yes, I did go look that location up on Google Maps just now. : p Again, thank you.

Not sure from the discussion, but did they move the graves/coffins, or just turn it into a park after removing the headstones?

The Polish only removed the headstones, planted trees and shrubbery and created some walking lanes. So they did it the easy way.
