Strutter crash

Hello

A plane crashed near Courtrai with A981 on the tail and a big 5 on the fuselage.

Does someone has the date of the crash.

Question But whot shot them down?

Hello!

For the 3. July I only found 2 entries in the book "The Jasta War Chronology".

There is one "Sopwith 2-seater" mentioned without further comments concerning crew or squadron. Oberleutnant Tutschek was credited with shooting down the above emntioned aircraft North of Vaulx at 10:30 am.

The problem is, that there is a Rollegem (roughly 5 km South of Courtai/Kortrijk) - but that place still is about 20 - 25 km away from Vaulx.

So can we assume that we talk about the same crash/victory?

.

Bonsoir

VERY Sorry !! the date mentionned on the link I gave you is WRONG
It is 3 JUNE 1917 and the opponent was probably Wfw Rudolf Francke of Jasta 8

Post Oops!

No problem!

In this case the possible victors are most probably Vfw Franke or Uffz Meinberg of Jasta 8. Each of them shot down a Sopwith 2-seater at about 16:45. But up to now I have not checked the places...

From the Jasta 8 log compiled by Rick Duiven, Uffz Matthias Meinberg made his claim at 16:45 over Menin while Vzfw Rudolf Francke made his claim at 16:50 over "Pembrouck".

Meinberg's claim probably reflects the loss of 70 Sqn's Strutter A1012, 2nd Lt R M Niel & Lt F W Harley, both KIA - their machine was last seen near Menin.

According to AIR1/848/204/5/385 (Reports on aeroplane and personnel casualties 1-14 June 1917), A981 was last seen near Menin on a photographic reconnaissance mission; according to AIR1/968/204/5/1100 (pilot and observer casualties, RFC France, 1 June 1917 - 28 February 1918) A981 fell at Rolleghem (some 12 Km south-east of Menin).

I have yet to positively identify "Pembrouck" but since A981 was the only other Strutter lost at about this time, it seems reasonable to link Francke's claim with the loss of this machine.
