bulged cover

Hello,

This bulged cover (about 30 cm) was found on a former WWI aerodrome in Belgium. its distinctive drop-like shape and aluminum made lead for an aircraft, perhaps a cover for cable pulley?

Thank you for identification.

Best regards

ClinA-78

PS: Is anyone here 'specialist' in identification of German WWI aircraft parts ?

Lots of experts on here. BTW Austrian parts rather than German may be what you are trying to identify.

Are there any more holes in it on the other side?

Without knowing what's on the other side of it I would guess it was an inner aileron pulley cover from the top port or bottom starboard wing from a DH.4 or DH.9.

Thanks for replying.

@ rsanz : DH.4 or DH.9 would make sense as a RAF Sqn occupied the drome after the Armistice.
There are only those two holes at the right side.

@ Brad : What do you mean about Austrian parts? Sorry my WW1 A/C parts knowledge is limited.

Best regards

It seems the cover does not fit the DH.4 or DH.9 outfit. Perhaps a picture should help.
Thanks for your beforehand help.

Hi,

It certainly looks like a DH9 pulley cover to me too. I helped to restore one in the late 1980's and early 1990's, and became very familiar with most of the components of it. How do you know that it's not from a DH9 (or a DH4 - I think many parts are the same as on the DH9). The only German aeroplane I can think of with external aileron control wires are some versions of early Albatros B types such as the B.II. I've got a book about the B.II (written by a member here) so I will have a look at it to see if the B.II had pulleys for the aileron control wires, and whether or not the pulleys had covers.

Regards,

David.

Thanks David,

You should be more expert than me in this matter. Any chance to have a picture of that pulley cover fixed on the DH.4/9 by the way? I checked the available pictures but found nothing.
The part was found not far away from... a AEG G.IV part. Not related however.

Best regards.
