Sutton Bonington POW Escape 24th Sept 1917
Hi all
Twenty three German Officer POW broke out of the Sutton Bonington Officers POW Camp in Nottinghamshire on 24th September 1917. They were all recaptured within a week. The escapees surnames and descriptions were listed in The Times of 26th September 1917, including the colour of their uniforms. This has helped identify which service they belonged to and it is possible they could be flyers - three of the four identified so far are flyers. I have identified some of their first names from other sources but am hoping that someone may recognise some of the names, which I have listed below. I am looking for biographical information/photos for an exhibition in Nottingham later this year.
The escapers were:
Kapitanleutnant Karl von Muller - Captain SMS Emden
Oberleutnant-zur-See Stephan von Prondzynski - Seeflieger Abteilung 1
Leutnant Otto Thelen - Flieger Abteilung 5
Leutnant zur See Wilhelm Löewe - II F-Staffel
Kurt Berschmann - Army Leutnant der Reserve
