For pilots...

Text - H.R.3708 - 113th Congress (2013-2014): General Aviation Pilot Protection Act of 2013 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

This bill is to eliminate the requirement for a 3rd class medical certificate for Pilot In Command to operated aircraft with a maximum of 6 seats and a maximum of 6000 pounds takeoff weight for not-for-hire VFR operations.

That law is in response to the FAA dragging their feet on a petition proposed by the EAA and AOPA to amend the medical certificate requirements.

If changed, the requirement to have a formal aviator's medical certificate will be eliminated for a substantial population of the recreational pilots pool. However, there will still remain a requirement that the pilot "self regulate" themselves related to their fitness for flight.

What I am wondering however, is what the insurance companies are going to do. Even now, there are some differences with what can be legally done per the FAA and what is covered by some insurance policies.

Being an IFR rated pilot, it won't help me.

Military pilots don't have a license, they don't issue one.

I went to fly a huey once at the geneseo airshow, and the FAA guy wanted to see my license ... and although I have one, I wasn't required to present one as a military guy. So I told him I didn't have one.
The look on his face was priceless!
One of the other military folks there had to explain it to the FAA guy.

Don't go long far without telling the rest of the story.
Military pilots do have certification, it is just not in the form of an FAA license certificate/card. It is maintained in our records. And when basic flight training is completed, any military pilot can apply for the FAA version, and as they complete the various requirements, receive instrument and commercial credentials.

More to the point, the question re: insurance is interesting. Will rates be higher for those that do not get medical? I hope not.
It will be some to see if the law gets passed.
And BTW, it was not the FAA's fault. The EAA and AOPA blew off the meeting to finalize some negotiations. The FAA came as requested, but our organizations sent no-one.
