SK1-Albatros B.II at the Swedish Airforce Museum

A German pilot damaged his Albatros B II during a refuelling stop in Stockholm in 1914 .WW1 broke out before the plane was repaired and the swedish authorities took over the Albatros and they later produced copies of the aircraft

The Albatross became a standard Swedish military Aircraft 40 Albatross aircrafts were built in Sweden the swedish navy also purchased some Albatross aircrafts from Germany.

Hi Anna-Karin,

Thank you very much for posting the photo of the Albatros, and for the account describing how it came to be in possession of the Swedish authorities. Very interesting!

Regards,

David.

Here is the plane from a slightly different angle

In Sweden the aircraft was used for reconnaisssance during WW1. Later it was used for flight training equipped with dual controls. It was given the designation SK-1 whe the Swedish Airforce was formed in 1926. and remained in Service unto the end of 1920thies . This Albatross at the Airforce Museum is build in 1925 but closely resembles the original aircraft wich landed in 1914.
I wonder who the unfortunate German pilot was who had to land with the original aircraft and then return to Germany without it ?

Hey Anna-Karin,

the 'unfortunate' Albatros pilot was Leutnant zur See (something like 2nd. Lieutenant with the Navy) Lothar Wieland (German-FAI licence #618). He was on a tour advertising the Albatros biplane. But he had not made a stopover during a cross-country flight, he gave public and official demonstration flights with the intention to sell that type to the Swedish army. If things happened to his expectations, he would not have returned with the machine, but rather come back with an additional order for Albatros aircraft.

Well, the war stopped these plans and I read the Swedish army eventually confiscated and/or bought his machine - and then started remake production with the SAF - Svenska Aeroplanfabriken (Gothenburg), NAB - Nordiske Aviatik Bolaget (Midsommarkransen) and Södertälje Werkstäder (also near Stockholm). As well the FVM - Flygkompaniets Verkstäder på Malmen (Malmö) built two new series of that type, from 1918 till 1929!

Cheers

Thanks for the Information about the pilot. Malmen however is not situated in Malmö wich is a city in the most south of Sweden close to Denmark but just outside Linköping (in the province of Östergötland) the Swedish Airforce Museum is situated nearby

Oh, ...

Thanks for clearing that Malmen thing. I was too hastily writing and not thinking. Would Malmslätt, Linköping be right, or is Malmen a place of its own?

Cheers
