Jasta 29 losses 4 September 1917

Hi

On 4 September Ltn. Siegfried von Lieres und Wilkau was wounded in combat at 20.00 hours in a battle in the sky over Poelkapelle and Houthulster Wood and had to be taken to hospital.
That same day, and probably in the same dogfight, Ltn.d.R. Gebhard Emberger was shot down in flames over Poelkapelle and Houthulst Wood at 20.06 hours. He leaped from his aircraft and was killed.

I have no claims, don't tell me it was 56 Sqdn LOL

Best regards,

Johan

Hi Johan

You guessed it! SE5's from a mixed A & B flight patrol attacked three Alb scouts over Houlthoust Wood at 1900 BT. Lt Potts sent one down in flames and was confirmed to have crashed south of Houlthoust by Capt Maxwell. JTB describes this flamer in his book (he was below), but incorrectly dates it as 3 Sep 17. This was clearly Ltn Emberger, who as you know is recorded as going down in flames south of Houlthoulst at 2006GT. Lt Muspratt drove another one down, which was the attacked by three Camel's of 70 Sqn (although they never submitted a claim). This was clearly von Lieres.

Cheers Russ

Russ,

This one really made me laugh out loud ! I don't know what it is but I keep bumping into 56 Squadron and I'm fascinated by this unit.
It all started with a visit of the location where Voss crashed and where Rhys Davids crashed.
Since that moment, for one or other unknown reason, I am more and more fascinated by this unit, also why I bought HITEB. If only I could find it back, even looked for it again last night.

Sincere thanks !!!

Best regards,

Johan

Hi Johan

I think 56 Sqn demonstrated what RFC pilots could do with a combat capable machine. A lot of their fellow fighter pilots over the 3rd Ypres were bravely toiling with machines that had a horse power and fire power disadvantage when compared to the German machines, exacerbated by having to fight over the German side.

Cheers Russ
