US Cadet's Amusing Training Incident

Following America's entry into World War I in 1917, many US aviation personnel were sent to Canada to be trained by the RFC. The attached newspaper report, from The Barrie Examiner of September 20, 1917, describes a somewhat amusing (though dangerous) incident in the life of one American cadet training at Camp Borden. Fortunately he survived without any reported injuries!

The aircraft being flown was a JN-4 Canuck, a Canadian version of the Curtiss Jenny built under licence by Canadian Aeroplanes Ltd. (Note: "Camp Hoare" - named after the commander of the RFC in Canada - was the RFC establishment located within the bounds of Camp Borden.) Barrie was located about 12 miles east of Camp Borden.

Nice, funny ending to a little exhibition. He was lucky.

... happened then... still happens today.

Yes, he was very lucky and the folks in the boat were fortunate too. I wonder what the two young ladies thought of it all - at least the date was one they weren't likely to forget!

I don't suppose any Forumites know what ever became of Cadet Paul G. Ratcliff from Vicksburg, MS?
