Previous: Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* --

The Rules:

1. The thread title must be "Breguet's Aircraft ID Challenge #......"
2. The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3. The completed aircraft must have been either; designed, built or have left the ground during the '14-'18 period and be identifiable by the poster.
4. The photo must show the whole aircraft - from whatever angle, or at least 2 views of a 3 view drawing (photo by preference).
5. Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified (always check the list at Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* -- when in doubt !) and the poster re-post within the same thread, the 12hours handicap beginning from that point.
6. If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of an aircraft for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the aircraft is submitted.
7. Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they become an ACE. Once they become an ACE they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
8. To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
9. The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
10. If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
11. The final arbiter in relation to questions about the rules is BREGUET.

And here we go...

BTW being a long-time photoshop geek I always fiddle with images like this. Old photos can almost always be significantly improved with just a little bit of fiddling with levels, noise reduction, unsharp mask and clone stamping out damage. In this case I did all three, including removing a bunch of scanning artifacts in the sky.

This aircraft has many of the characteristics of Austro Hungarian Hansa Brandenburg aircraft such as the inward leaning interplane struts and rudder shape. It also appears to have a plywood fuselage and clear doped linen wings. The two engines and shear size of this aircraft makes me believe it to be the Hansa Brandenburg G. 1.

The Hansa-Brandenburg G.I was designed by Ernst Heinkel in late 1915, and was unusual in that it had two 160hp Austro Daimler engines mounted to the fuselage via truss work rather than the wing. This certainly simplified wing structure but resulted in a heavy and complicated mounting. It was armed with two Schwarzlose MGs in flexible mountings front and back and was intended for the bombing role.

Twelve were built (of an originally ordered 48) but they suffered numerous unspecified problems and flew only one sortie in three months of active service. The rest of the order was canceled and they were moved to training units. There was apparently an effort to bring them back to service as night bombers, but again they didn't fare well.

The Austro-Hungarians instead bought some three dozen Gothas.

Point to Albrecht! One more and you have to sign up for the atomic accuracy twelve hour alarm clock.

For anyone interested, before and after on the photo. And actually I should have reduced noise a bit more on the final version, unfortunately it's small already and has lots of jpg compression artifacts.

Yep, it apparently was, sigh. I searched on Hansa on every page, and 716 is listed as Brandenburg G.I. Fragnabit. Ok I guess I get to do this all over, sorry Albrecht, it was a good one on your part.

2-bay biplane with under-center section radiator and engine installation that look like Pomilio PC, Italian 1917 2-seater with Fiat engine.

I believe that this 2 seat, 2 bay tractor biplane is a Pomilio PC, powered by a 260 hp Fiat A – 12 engine.
