Hi,

Does anyone have more details on the circumstances in which the following bomber planes got interned in Holland and what the names were of their crew members ?

18th August 1917 : two Gotha G IV's 1055/16 and 1059/16 - only looking for crew members.

28th September 1917 : again two Gotha's a GIV, 602/16 and a G V (?) 668/16 - only looking for crewmembers

13th October 1917 : a Gotha G IV 1065/16 - looking for unit, circumstances and crew

23rd May 1918 : Friedrichshafen G III 828/17

8th November 1918 : Friedrichshafen G III serial unknown

Thanks and best from Regulus

Hi Regulus,

Sorry all I have is in the article I sent you a while back....the only significant details being on the GIII on 8/11/18.

Crew Wendt, Helmcke and a sergeant.
Can't find any more details on the others.

regards

Darryl

Hi Darryl,

Thanks ! Every little bit helps in this case !
I'm impatient to get your article !

At least we have a start on the interned crews. Meanwhile another name could be added to the list of Oblt. Rudolf Bäuerle in one of the 28 September planes, thanks to Rick.

Hi Regulus

I have some "unverified" information regarding the incident on 28 Sep 1917..

The first Gotha GIV 602/16 eventually had Lt dR Martin Emmler(killed) as observer. However the other two crew members is so far unknown to me and also the actual Kasta...

The other Gotha which I also have as a GIV, was piloted by Lt Starck Int, observer Oblt Rudolf Bäuerle and Vfw Heinrich Schreiber KI. Also here I dont have the actual Kasta...

Do you the actual unit of these two Gothas....?

???

Hi Gunnar,

No new names in this to me but important data on some of the personnel I had listed ! *Thanks ! *I didn't know what happened with Starck at all, and didn't have a unit. *This is one mystery solved ! *

Bäuerle was in fact CO of Kasta 13, so the mystery is solved for at least one plane if it hadn't been for the following :

The body found at the Dutch coast of crewmember Heinrich Schreiber, the Vizefeldwebel and gunner who belonged to Kasta 16...

Concerning Emmler he was with Kasta 16 as an observer. *It is not certain that he was in the other plane that was interned, but I can be. *His body was found in the North Sea it seems.
*
Are you certain that Schreiber and Bäuerle were in the same plane ? *This could be very interesting !

Fact is that the other plane could be one of the British claims of that day, and that part of the crew went overboard. *
602/16 seems to have crashed very badly as the Dutch have not tried to reparate it to take it into service with them.

668/16 burned down after landing. *By it's crew ? Or was it already in trouble ?

The British had three claims on Gotha's that day :

One Gotha claimed by the Chatham gun defences

One Gotha claimed by HM Monitor Marshal Ney off Ramsgate

One Gotha claimed by the Deal guns

It seems also another Kasta 16 gunner was killed that day, not found in the von Eberhardt list, a certain Emil Haas, also Vizefeldwebel... from one of these two planes or not ???

The claim of the Chatham gun defences could be the plane from Döge-Delang and Jödicke which crashed near Eernegem.

The one of the Ney is not taken serious, the one of Deal is however.

Ah mystery oh mystery. *Hope our friend Gunnar can solve more of it !

Thanks and best from Regulus *

Gunnar and Regulus,

This also makes more sense to me now that I think about it. The crew of 668/16 were from Kasta 13: Oblt. Rudolf Bäuerle, O and C.O., Uffz. Heinrich Schreiber, Gunner, and Ltn. Hans Starck, Pilot. Schreiber was KIA the other two were interned.

The crew of 602/16 were from Kasta 16: Ltn.d.R. Martin Emmler, Observer, KIA and two unknown ranks. One of these MAY have been Vzfw. Emil Haas, a pilot, who was KIA. The other man remains stealthly elusive. R.

Hi all,

according to the Stiasny notes in the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin Haas (P), Ermler (O) and Schreiber (G) were a crew with KG 3/16.
That's why I assume that Bäuerle und Starck were belonging to the second crew on 28Sept17 (KG 3/13?). Unfortunately their names are not mentioned by Stiasny.
Regulus, how can you verify that Bäuerle was CO of KG 3/13 ?

Mosen,

* I can do that. *The late Neal O'Connor had a copy of Bäuerle's service record and I copied it down when I last visited him, during the Washington DC OTF Seminar.
