Movie Title unknown
Around the mid 1970s, i hired a video.
My hazy recollection was
WW1 Air
Possible black and white
Story follows a young male turning up at ? and his journey into the horrors of war
I think the end of the movie has him looking up after watching a plane crash
Smack head on into another plane
That is the hazy recollection. So it may or may not be accurate
The "stick in the mind bit" was the look up and seeing another aircraft coming straight for you. And then the smack
Always wanted to get a copy of it, but for the life of me cannot remember the name of it. Google seems to be hopeless
Can anyone help please

If "Aces High" isn't the worst GW flying flick, it probably makes the finals. Right up/down there with "Richthofen and Brown." At least the egregious Flyboys has the benefit of CGI and production values. "The Blue Max" likely remains the class of the field, but The Finest GW Flying Flick" remains unmade. Grump.

Definately "Aces High" & its the young chap himself who collides with a German Aircraft just after he shot one down.

So you prefer crap CGI and a crap story to proper flying with proper aeroplanes and in "Aces High"s case a classic story!!!!
"Blue Max" is undoubtedly the best s far but its all a mater of taste nd subjectivity, however I still cannot understand CGI used over real aeroplane's

The 'Aces High' script borrowed quite a bit from Cecil Lewis' 'Sagittarius Rising.'
I think that with a better use of the Lewis material in a better written script and the assistance of TVAL's 'New Zealand' Airforce, someone like Peter Jackson could make a good film.

Barrett,
I agree with you re: "Richthofen and Brown," which I think is a real stinker. I don't recall having seen "Aces High." Like many others, I wanted "Flyboys" to succeed, as producer/director Tony Bill had enough "juice" in Hollywood (he won an Oscar for "The Sting" with Paul Newman) to launch a TV series on WW I aviation, which might have been even better -- even with CGI. Sadly, the movie tanked. Likewise, I had high hopes for "The Red Baron," but (as noted in my Over the Front review) it took too many liberties with the history.
So, yes, I can agree that "The Blue Max" is the best of the post-WW II movies about WW I aviation. But let's not forget the great flying scenes (with original WW I aircraft) in "Hell's Angels" and other inter-war films.
As noted elsewhere on this thread, "Winged Victory" would make a great, but would probably have to have graphic love scenes and other deviations from the novel to succeed.
Oh well, we can dream.
Peter

Of all the WWI aero flicks I've seen, Dawn Patrol(1938) is on the top of my list.Who could beat the aerodrome attack scene,it had real aircraft and real explosions,no special effects or CGI
