Thanks to some collaborative research (Thx Bernard Klaeyléit & Walter Pieters) it was possible to identify what is a Belgian Hanriot HD.2 fighter. Indeed the French Government had promised to deliver some 12 HD.2 by September/October 1918 to N° 1 Squadron (Parc) of the Belgian Air Service. However as the final offensive was progressing well the aircraft were never delivered. Most probably one of these machines was already painted in Belgian Air Service colors and ready for delivery when the picture was taken.
Thanks for a wondeful photo. The dark undersurface edge to the wings is "new" to me and I wonder what its purpose was. I was of the opinion that only the USN used the Hanriot HD-2 as a landplane. They converted a number of the HD-2 floatplanes that came back from France to landplanes post-war.
Let me add my thanks for the wonderful photo!! Like Colin, I'm intrigued by the dark 'border' to the wing undersurface. Also the camouflaged (?) wheel covers!
