Looking for German Air Leaders' Names

One thing about German aviation research that frustrates me is the general lack of fliers' first names. Rank and last (or family) name seems to be the rule, but sometimes all names are missing. Since it is a case of hit-or-miss, I thought I'd toss out two names to see if anyone can provide first (or both) names, as follows:

- Hauptmann Volkmann, Stabsoffizier der Flieger, Armee-Abteilung A in October 1916 (and it is not Hellmuth Volkmann, who was Oberleutnant at the time and attached to Jasta 6).

- Unidentified Hauptmann, Gruppenführer der Flieger, Gruppe Wytschaete, 4. Armee in October 1917.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Peter

Really Unusual Name

Along these lines, according to The Jasta Pilots, in Jasta 46 there was a lieutenant with the last name of Haar, and the improbably given name of "auf den." Lieutenant On the Hair. Three victories to him. The name does not seem to exist in modern day Germany.

Hi

According to one source Hptm Volkmann did have two "first" names, Bruno Dietrich.
I havent seen his signature so I am not sure which he used. Bruno would be the normal alternative, but he might have used Dietrich... depending on family tradition.

Grufl Wytschaete was apparently an ad-hoc unit and not a real Grufl, so the senior officer of the aviation units within that area had to do a double job.

Hi all,

though I can not help directly I would like to add that the above mentioned was Hauptmann in either Infanterie-Regiment No. 39 or Feldartillerie-Regiment No. 47.

Unfortunately we do not have a specialist who could look through the "Regiments-Geschichte" (regiment's history) for this man.

Volkmann

Thorsten,

Füsilier-Regiment Nr. 39 Volkmann was Harry Volkmann.

Fliers' names

At least the British (often but not always) supplied initials. With a bit of digging, one can (often but not always) fill in the blanks. A case in point is Captain T.H.P. Bayetto of No. 66 Squadron, RFC. His names were Tone Hippolyte Paul.

Thanks for all the comments.

Gunnar
Gunnar,

Was this Hauptmann Volkmann the same one who served as Stabsoffizier der Flieger, Armee-Abteilung A?
