Curtiss Jenny Markings Help?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to re-do my 1/6 Proctor Curtiss Jenny into accurate "A.S.M.S. Kelly Field" service markings as is shown in this drawing:

My search is for 'period' photos showing these markings on the Jenny. Any photographic help would be much appreciated.

Thank You,
Gary Sewall

Gary -

Try this one on for size.

(PS - You do not have to rip the wings off your model for accuracy....)

Thanks Mike! That photo is EXACTLY what I'd been looking for! This Forum is an amazing source for such research, eh?

Here's my 1/6 Proctor Curtiss Jenny that I hope to make the marking changes on:

As you can see, the wing's American stars are too undersized (they should be full-cord in diameter), and the "A.S.M.S. Kelly Field" markings are too oversized. Also, the model's wing leading edges are painted brown which I hope to remove, along with the decals, by using a new model decal/paint remover called "ELO". New decals of correct size are being produced.

I'll post her final modifications when finished.

Thanks so much again for your kind help.

Authenticity, Mike, AUTHENTICITY! It would make a very interesting diorama, especially if it had a couple of figures - maybe an instructor giving the student some remediation?

Before and after

How about if we let Gary just settle for explaining that his model is a "before" depiction and the photo can be used as the "after".... too pretty to take the wings off of it (even if you were kidding.....)

My ASMS markings

Here's a shot of my Proctor Jenny with the markings as shown in the Nieto drawings. The number is taken from a list of in-service Jennies. Markings were reproduced to full (1/6 scale) size, taking the stars from the Proctor plans and cutting frisket film masks. Color then airbrushed with Model Master enamels It's electric powered, so fuel proofing wasn't needed.

Fill us in with some more details of your Jenny. Are you on RCScalebuilder?

Any way to get a look at this list ? I've put a very, very incomplete list toegterh for my own reference to help ID photos, but anything that can be added to that would be great.

Mike,

I came across this while researching for the Jenny a couple of years ago:

1908-1921 USAAS Serial Numbers

It still is an active site, but if you can't get it I can scan my printout for you.

BTW, I used a number of photos of the Daugherty Jenny restoration in detailing my Jenny.

Thanks a bunch for that link - it'll be useful. Paul will be happy to hear you've used his Jenny to get the details right.

Keep at it,
-Mike
