Rise of Flight.

This computer flight sim of WW I aerial combat seems quite good to me. I just purchased it about a week ago.

The learning curve is VERY steep. It's extremely difficult.

Good luck with it. It IS very difficult, but also very realistic. They didn't make a 3d model of a plane and assigned attributes to it in an excel file (turn rate, speed, etc...) But they model every piece of the aircraft separately with their own attributes. So, when the aircraft is damaged the flight mdoel will change accordingly. No other simulator comes nearly as close to real flying.

Not to mention the stunning graphics and sounds, just check the next thread and watch the video I made

Indeed there is a learning curve as (Reflected pointed out) the FM/DM/SFx are really top notch.

I believe that by the end of Q1 of 2012 the Career mode will be out of Beta and will be every bit as deep as RBII/3D. Just keep buying those planes.

Oh, and if you want a 1.21b version back up disc you can buy the current copy of PC Pilot as it has a free disc attached.

I may have to keep the game on "Novice" setting. I don't know if I'll have enough time to devote to getting my skills up to the level needed to fly those planes on the most realistic setting.

I suggest you give it a try. Novice settings will take the fun out of the game and will give you bad habits.

Crashing my plane on every flight, often on take off, is also a nasty habit !

Here is a pretty good procedure:

- Throttle up gradually
- As soon as you feel - and see - the craft pulling to one side apply some opposite rudder - not too much
- Continue to throttle up gradually
- You should straighten out and will now bring the rudder back to neutral
- You should feel - and see - your tail leaving the ground
- Now you are at full throttle and will gently pull back on the stick to get airborne - again - not too much.

Once you pick up speed in the air you will be fine.

(It helps if you have a FF stick, pedals and Track IR)

Thanks. I will try the suggestions.

What is FF stick and Track IR, please?

It also helps to push the stick a little bit forward in order to raise the tail. As long as the tailskid is on the ground it has a braking effect.

FF stick means force feedback. It brings simulation to another level. When parked on the ground the controls are floppy, there are no stick forces whatsoever, easy to move around. Then you start the engine, and the airflow over the elevator can be felt. But because you1re not moving, the ailerons still don't have any resistance. Then you start rolling, and you can feel your stick shaking as the machine speeds through the bumpy field, and then the shaking suddenly disappears as the wheels leave the ground.

It also helps to judge when your machine is about to stall - less speed= les airflow= weaker stick forces + you can feel the buffeting.

I can only recommend it!

Track IR is a device that track your real life head movement and moves your virtual head around accordingly. It makes the whole experience 3D and you don't have to use your hand and the mouse to kook around.

How good is the flight model?

Well, I practiced my wheel landings in the Dolphin when getting my tailwheel certification in a Champ!
