J.G. Goodyear RFC

A friend is restoring a 1/3 scale Pup (very nice job he's made of it too BTW) flown by Second Lieutenant J.G Goodyear RFC.

Has anyone got a photograph of Goodyear please so that he can "get the pilot right"?

Thanks

Alan

I have a feeling that 2nd Ltn John Goodyear might have had an Australian connection and that he might have died in Sidney in 1946. It would be great to put a face (and more history) to a name!

Here's the Pup, just needs J.G. to grace the cockpit.

Thanks BTW to Kevin for the use of his photographs of Shaun's fine model.

He was appointed a 2nd Lt on probation for duty with the RFC on 5 August 1916 and was appointed a Flying Officer on 17 March 1917. He served with Nos 39 and 112 Squadron RFC. He was granted a commission on probation in Class A, General Duties Branch, as a Flying Officer in the Reserver of Air Force Officers on 28 October 1924.

The London Gazette of 15 November 1932 carried the announcement:

ROYAL AIR FORCE RESERVE.
RESERVE OF AIR FORCE OFFICERS
General Duties Branch

The follg. Flying Officers relinquish their commns. on completion of service:—Flyng Officer J. G. Goodyear relinquishes his commn. on completion of service and is permitted to retain his rank (Oct. 28).

So far I haven't turned up an Australian connection.

Graeme

Many thanks Graeme.

The suspicion of an Austrailian connection is because a found a reference to the death of a J.G Goodyear in the family announcements column of a Sidney paper. I will try and find the link.

Our man gets a few mentions in the Flight Global archive at various times
in the Gazetting reports.

2/Lt. JOHN GORBELL GOODYEAR

John Gorbell Goodyear was born 12 January 1892, at Gaydon, Surrey,
England, was living in Hythe, Kent, in 1901 and at Hailsham, Sussex
in 1911, and he died at Malvern, Worcestershire, England, in 1980.
He served as a Private in the 19th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers
Regiment and as a 2nd/Lieutenant in 153 Squadron, RAF. You can
download his RAF officer's service record, for a fee, from the
National Archives U.K. online service
(The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | RAF Officers' Service Records)
at the following reference:

John Gorbell Goodyear, birthdate 12 January 1892 AIR 76/188

No Australian connection here at all--either prewar or postwar.
His parents, Charles & Nelly Goodyear, were also British.

Many thanks Josquin,

That's excellent - good to get some definitive information and an excellent reference site.

The Australian connection was a complete red herring then!

Thanks

In The Aerodrome mailbag this morning...

Hi – please can you advise – I am project manager for a glass plate digitisation project based in Sutton Surrey. In the course of researching one of our plates I came across a post on your forum asking for info and images of a JG Goodyear.

I believe we may have two images of this individual in our collection but there is no way of replying to the thread. I attach a link to our Flickr page where the images are freely available.

We are a HLF funded project to digitise a large collection of images, many of military personnel from, or stationed near Sutton. We are posting new images and blog articles every week to our wordpress site and flickr page. Please do let your members know if you think we may be of use in their research.
