Let's try the Tallmantz D.VII conversion

Started with the old DML/Dragon 1/48kit. Despite the long years of Hollywood use including swapping out the original engine for a Hispano Suiza, this old girl was still a real Fokker D.VII underneath the facelifts and makeup. I rebuilt the nose- totally- adding the fittings for an upperwing tank and modified the cockpit from some pretty good pictures of what it actually looked like at this time. The louvers and nose panel demarcations were painted on the actual bird- so they are here too! The faux-Udet markings are as accurate as I could make them- for this actual airplane, in this actual time frame. This is what she looked like in the early 60s when I saw her at the old Orange County Airport Tallman/Mantz museum. But underneath it al she was still a Fokker!
She appeared once before here on the Forum, but with one shot, under the 50k limit.

Terrific model Robert!! And, you have the advantage of knowing that the colors are right.....for this particular Fokker at this point in time.

Great!!

Beautifully executed, RK, and guttsy! I love it. Very fine conversion. From what I can recall of photos I've seen, she's spot on.

That is Great!
Did you ever read Frank Tallman's book "Flying the old planes"? There is a chapter devoted to this very Fokker.
Is the plane still in existance?

Greg, Bud- thanks!
Yep- I have the Tallman book and used it extensively for this project, and also a bunch of other stuff including some web finds and a couple of old crummy pics I shot myself as a kid. An oldish issue of WW I Aero had an article about this airplane when it arrived in the Netherlands for it's last restoration, and this included some "naked" photos, revealing the Hollywood cockpit interior. And yes- she still exists! She's been restored for several years now and lives in a Dutch museum and has appeared here on the Forum a couple of times.

Very well done, and an interesting well documented subject! I have always wanted to Do Erroll Flynns' Nieuport 28 from Dawn Patrol but have Never had the Nerve to start cutting up wings and making I struts etc. Again your DVII is outstanding!

Howdy Robert,

Ah yes, my 1960's childhood dreams when seeing this very D.VII up close at good old "Movieland of the Air" at Orange County Airport. Such things do make dreams a future reality, eh?

Thanks for your fine Tallmantz D.VII rendition and your master modeling skills!

Best Regards,
Gary Sewall
