Jasta 30 Pfalz DIIIa
Here's a little non-commissioned piece that I just finished. It's a Pfalz DIIIa of Jasta 30. Jasta 30 is one of the few units to be equipped exclusively with the Pfalz. Its aircraft carried a distinct orange diamond on the fuselage and empennage, and many carried some sort of variation of a striped design on the fuselage. This particular machine is one that I spotted way in the background of a photo taken at the group's airfield.
For the finished work I chose a complimentary color scheme leaning heavily on blue and yellow/orange with just a narrow range of red and green in between. It's a small piece- 8.5" x 13". At that small size I decided to keep the background loose and painterly. Jasta 30 Pfalz DIIIa oil on linen on masonite

Okay Russ,
days after Jack confirmed that all the proofs are ready at the publisher, you create this gorgeous piece: i can hear the calls for volume 2 already! seriously though, that is as nice a Pfalz as i have ever seen- Mike O'Neal and Jack Leynwood have also done well in the past. very well done! jim |
