WNW Roland D.VIa

Well my 4th WNW model and my first one I've shown on here was completed a couple of hours before the wind got hold of the curtains in my study and trashed my first WNW model a SE5a

Construction was very easy with no gotchas at all. Even the struts with paint on went home with room to spare, the only issue I had was some crappy super glue that was guaranteed not capable of even sticking the sticky stuff to a blanket.

GCN,
Beautiful work on the D.VI. The woodwork, lozenge and rigging look top notch. Well done!

Sorry to hear about the SE5.a. Can the old girl be saved?

Cheers,
Bob

Great stuff ! I never realized that this aircraft had actual strips of wood (plywood ?) running lengthwise down the fuselage.Interesting ! Almost like ship building methodology.

Wonderful finish. The wood is very convincing. This is my favorite scheme (but I'm set on a red band instead of the black one for a little more color ). I've got this kit in my stash and I've been thinking about the best way to run a control cable from the elevator through the pulley. Could we get a close up of that portion of the fuselage to see how you handled it?

Thanks,
Rob

A most decent finish, no doubt. The strips of exposed wood can be a challenge of its own.

Good afternoon,

Dead on, John, klinkerrumpf or lapstrake construction, think Viking longship. Each strake comprised multiple short pieces joined together with a finger/ comb joint.

Light and strong but labor intensive and costly to build and difficult to repair damage without a chain-saw. In other words, no match for Fokkers slapped together steel tubing in the Fokker D.VII.

Beautiful build, gcn, I hope mine turns out half as good. My S.E.5a came a cropper as well, but rebuilds handily. I used timber coffee stirrers from the canteen as replacement struts, she's better than ever as I prefer the Mk2, battered looking, paint job.

With regards,
Mike.

Congratulations on an outstanding build. The Klinkerumpf method of wood slatted sides is perfectly represented. Sorry about the Se5.
