Color footage / photographs

So I was looking at this startling youtube video: [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP_0DkpFOKs"]YouTube - WW1 Combat in Colour 1914-1918[/nomedia]

There's something about seeing those images in color that brings home the reality of it all. B&W makes things feel so remote.

I wonder, what all color photography and video from the WW1 era is out there? I'd love to see more. I searched google images and saw a color photo of MvR that was fantastic.

G'day Anjelus!
Mate to the best of my knowledge there were NO WW1 Film/shots in Colour.
Some Postcards (like MvR) would have been coloured for publication but I believe ALL film was B & W.
There has been a DVD issued called "WW1 in Colour" where the B & W has been coloured by Digital/Computer Imaging as I was lent this by a friend & genually it was well done.

An "Official War Photographer" from Australia, Frank Hurley, took a number of colour plates of various scenes. Many others (if not most) have been colourised.

Clearly not what you were interested in.

Frank's colour photos can be found if you Google Frank Hurley colour photographs. You will also see photos of the ill-fated Shackelton Expedition in colour.

YouTube has this:

[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uz08u5KRec"]YouTube - Masters of Photography - Frank Hurley[/nomedia]

I haven't seen it, as our work computer will not allow us to watch YouTube clips, but that link might be of interest.

The colourised footage shown at the beginning of this thread is from the Television miniseries, World War 1 in Colour.

Buy it on DVD, it is well worth watching.

Hello Anjelus,

There's an original color photograph of a French Nieuport Scout (17?) out there.
I have a copy somewhere, buried in my thousands of images online.

Thanks for sharing, FOKKERJ

My guess is that this photo is the one showing him in his cavalry cape with digital coloring added. I've seen it around online.
