Some attention for Karaya's Halberstadt CL IV

I had a little sabbatical from ww1 modelling (focussed on Spanish Civil War and other late biplanens some time), but this model from Karaya got me back on business. I did a little search on the internet, but so far I have not come across a picture of a build example, let alone some sort of review. Bit strange in my humble opinion, cause this excellent kit sure deserves attention! Could it be the WNW hype which causes this!?

Anyway, I made a start with the kit this week.

I will be doing it mostly OOB.

Wonderful PE bits:

Very well cast resin bits:

The Mercedes benz engine is the very very best one I ever came across.

Luckily I was able to have a good look at the real thing not that long ago

Will try to keep you guys informed.

Cheers, Nico

hey bud, i have that kit and nice as it is you know the instructions arent great. so i got a helpful tip for you. when this kit was in production before it was released there was a thread showing color photos of what they were doing. low and behold when i got the kit all those color photos were the ones in blurry b&w on the kit instructions. so i saved that thread to my favorites so that when i started building the kit i could use the very clear color photos that are much larger in size. so without further adieu here is the link:

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/mo...-karaya-4.html

actually there are much more photos then on the instructions so enjoy all the nice views they will help you build this gem of a kit, also the below link is the real deal in a museum, another nice reference for you. good luck and keep the pics rolling in, you might just motivate me to start her up.and yeah it is a very nice resin motor, it has little hoses and spark plug wires molded on.the only thing is they forgot to include intake pipes for the pilots left side of the motor.a tip on that is that eduard diii motors have the same cylinder spacing so if you have a spare parts kit( i do) or if you have a busted kit that you built a while back with an eduard mercedes you can snag the intakes off of that.if not let me know and i'll mail you a set, i got plenty.cant wait to see what you do with her.

Same here. I've got two of these. Don't know why I haven't started them yet.

I have one, too, and will be following this thread closely. It's a superb kit, but, although the Mercedes engine is incredible, it should be the later version with the rocker arms and springs at the fronts of the blocks on top of the cylinders, not on the sides. I've read also that the extra intake pipes from one of the Roden Fokker D.VIIs will fit as well.

Glad to see this model on the bench. I have its smaller brother from Ardpol and am going to look at this thread with great interest. I wonder, which colour scheme have you chosen. And what length of the fuselage - early short Halb or late longer?

I have to say that buying from the Karaya site has been a joy. bought some nice 1/32 guns there.
Fast delivery as well.
1/48 is a bit small for me, but this kit looks real nice. Wish they made a 1/32 plane... or realy good magnifiers

Thanks for the comments so far, further pics will be coming soon. Also a good reminder to see that Karaya thread with colored pictures (just saw a few of my own posts back ). Things look just a bit better. When doing work on the cockpit is just amazes me how little instruments this plane has got. So far, even though it's a short run kit the fot of the patrs is very good.

Many cheers, Nico

Working on the interior I got my eyebrows up a few times.

Looking at pic above, one can see an instrument against the left fuselage. But, the kit contains three instruments on a plastic film, one for the actual instrument panel (film 3), one for the right fuselage (film 2) and one on the left wing (compass, film 1). This means the instrument for the left fuselage ain't there .

Furthermore I can only find the two switches in the middle of the instrument panel, can't find the handle for the Bosch dynamo...

Okay maybe a bit nitpicking...

Cheers, Nico
