Question IPMS and the use of wood.

Does the IPMS shun all wood models even those that are partially wood such as instrument panels etc....? Just wondering.

I pondered this back in the 90s before I started the contest campaigning with my scratchbuilt Gotha and HP 0/400. Both were mostly wood- but I never had a problem, whether it was an independant or IPMS contest. I was bluntly told the IPMS didn't care about this issue anymore.

Back in my contest days I had meticulously assembled and detailed Diorama
that included a detailed to scale '40 Union Pacific Boxcar. This was to
enhance the 1/40 scale farm truck (Revell) that I had unloading that
Car. I was had by the following: Use of wood in Boxcar. # of side panels on Box Car. Boxcar itself. Documentation of Boxcar panels not allowed.
End of IPMS days.
Glad to see they allow wood now...
Don't have that Diorama any more
ex-wife burnt it...

II. 2. COMPOSITION. The use of plastic is encouraged; however, the use of other modeling materials is allowed as the builder sees fit. Judging standards of finish, attention to detail, and authenticity will be the same, regardless of the materials used.
-From the IPMS contest rules.

There used to be a percentage rule but yes, as stated, the amount of plastic isn't that important any more. But do keep in mind, it is the International PLASTIC modeler's society
The IPMS has been allowing metal figures for as long as I've been a member.
I think it's more a state of mind thing now.

What's that? They didn't allow the documentation or your boxcars?
To my knowledge there were never any rules stating that dioramas need to be made of plastic.
I'd be interested in hearing the whole story about this one.

I think it is unclear and in fact inconsistent, a ship model at the IPMS show in the UK in November was not judged in the competition as it was made partly from, I think, plaster. The fact that the same modeller built another model with the same materials a few years before and won the category was not taken into account. Seems like it is down to the judges on the day.

This is getting confusing maybe it should be called the IMMS or the double M society.(International Multimedia Modelers Society) This would be more in keeping with modern times.
