RFC or RNAS?

I am trying to trace my father in law's service records during the 1st World War, at every turn I hit a brick wall. He was in the Northumberland Fusiliers then transfered to either the RFC or RNAS. I have been unable to find any trace of him being transfered.

I have the following information:
Name William Alexander Welch Watson
Joined RFC/RNAS in 1917?
Long Number 256094 and an RAF service number of 319479 Flight Cadet on his discharge papers.

I have consulted the research staff at the RAF museum at Hendon and they believe that the 6 digit number belongs to the series of RNAS personnel transferred to the RAF

I would be grateful for any assistance

Thank you

Lightbulb Family research

Have you tried the National Archives online search for RFC/RNAS/RAF personnel? I've used it recently and they tell me that everything they have, has now been digitised. There were a lot of WW1 records which were destroyed in WW2 so if your search draws a blank there then they won't have it.

The other suggestion is to try the Army records as that might show a transfer to the appropriate Air Services/Flying Corps. Again if the records survived.

Best of luck

I have answered this on another forum for "Bertie".

I think you should be able to find a copy of his RAF record at the National Archives at Kew, west London. It should be in AIR79/2764 which covers the range 319454 to 319580, these documents are not on line but you can request a quote for a copy from the NA.

Thank you AHC-ED & John G for youre kind replies to my post.

I have been to both Kew and the RAF Museum and have exhausted all leads, still stuck with my brick wall.

Thank you once again.

According to the list in Hobson's "Airmen Died in the Great War 1914-1918" service numbers 244711 to 260000 were allocated to the RNAS in 1918; service numbers 316000 to 326000 were RAF Cadet allocations in October 1918.

Also

In the London Gazette of 4 January 1944, Captain William Alexander Welch Watson, Master, Merchant Navy is listed as having been made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. If this is your father-in-law, then this reinforces the "naval" lineage.
