Eduard 1.48 Albatros D.III Oeffag 253 Question

Okay, another question born out of ignorance. I have always liked the Albatros series of fighters. So, when Eduard released their D.III Oeffag 253 I ordered one. Admittedly, I really had very little idea what a D.III Oeffag 253 was. So now Pheon Models is releasing some unbelieveable decals for the Oeffag Albatros D.III in 1/48 scale. My problem, the decals that I want to use are for a 153 series bird. Rowan says that all of the series depicted in the decal sheets "can be built from the parts included Eduard 253 kit". So my question is, what parts must be used, if at all any, when I try to build a 153 series using the stock Eduard D.III Oeffag 253 kit?

The 153 has the spinner as the regular Albatros D.III, and the exhaust pipes also. These are included in the Eduard kit but shaded as "not used".

I believe also that the Swartzlose MGs are buried in the fuselage.

Good Luck!

Just went to their site! Awesome decals! Probably will be building the 253 kit very soon!

Just received Windsock last night with photos of the sprues. Looks like all the parts for .153 are there and Rowen has the markings to boot!

from what ive read the series 53s all had spinners and connected exhaust, that means omit part b21 "the blunt nose" and use b8 and b3 as well as exhaust b22.also use the buried swarzlose gun option deck c3. 153s some had spinners some didnt so for that you need to use spinner b3 with nose cap b8.or just the nose cap b8. some late 153s had the b21 blunt nose .check your references for individual schemes to make sure, some had connected exhaust b22 and some had separate exhaust b23.i'm gonna replace the sep ex with 1mm brass tubing flattened at the end that connects to the motor i think it looks better.i have a few references including windsock datafille 19 and the japo book as well as others so if you have a specific question let me know and i'll check for you.

Hi SWApilot,

one of the best references currently available, is Koloman Mayrhofer's replica build of 253.24 in flyworthy 1:1 scale (tons of photos). ==> http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/re...i-news-87.html, latest ones: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/re...tml#post530346

Cheers, Marcus

Hi,

At the Nats, Vladimir Sulc told me it was scheduled for September, but I see today on the Eduard website it is in the list of October releases.

Profipack release, at USD$34.95 from Eduard.

I have no idea what is in the box yet. I expect Stephen will get a review copy and post details before I get one.

Differences between 253 & 153 Series Abatri D.III Oef.

Hi SWApilot!
I've been considering this as well, as I have 2 of the 253 kits.
Biggest differences I've found in my references are that 153 has straight trailing edges on control surfaces, while the 253 has scalloped trailing edges. Bioth are in the 253 kit.
Some early production series 153 had the original Albatros nose, but mostly sans spinners. Later production was the first to use the rounded, spinnerless nose as seen on the 253 series.
253 had upgraded enginem, but I think you can get away with the kit engine, just swap out the part whih I think is the manifold (opposite side of engine from the exhaust pipes) recomended for the 253 which has 8 pipes, for the other one in the kit, which has 6. (Sorry, I'm not at home, and don't seem to be able to access the kit instructions from the Eduard site, so I can't give part numbers. I'm not sure if this part is actually called the manifold! )
Some very few 153 seem to have had raised guns, but mostly they were buried.
Eduard now has the 153 kit available on their website, BTW!

Good luck, Sopwith8
