German markings

This may have been answered many times, but I'm a WW1 newbie.

My dad bought me a WNW Albatross DVa for my birthday. The paint schemes show two main national markings: the 'iron cross' and a thinner cross where the 'iron cross' flanges have been painted out.

When and why did they change their national markings like that?

Thanks, experts!
