Field applied paint coverage
It is quite obvious in photos of Fokker Dr.I's that the original factory applied streaking shows through the Jasta and personal field applied paint. Dan San Abbott, in his excellent book Schlachtflieger, has color artwork of a red and yellow Halberstadt Cl.II with the previous paint job of Schlasta 21's black and white showing through. I am not quite sure about paint coverage of the lozenge covered wings. Did field applied paint allow a faint image of the printed lozenge to be seen? If so this would require the application of lozenge decals first followed by a thinned coat of color.
There are alot of aircraft with overpainted lozenge and factory painted colors. Should most of these be first decaled and painted in the original schemes first? Red,yellow, and other light colors would seem to have the least covering power. Black, silver and dark colors would seem to be opaque.
The quality of paint was not always the best. Also multiple coats had the disadvantage of taking too much time, paint, and of course a weight penalty.
Does anyone have a sample of original lozenge that was overpainted? Comments please.
