Max Immelmann Bust

Below are some smudgy snaps of a bust of the Eagle Of Lille I sculpted earlier this year. He is 1/10th scale and is available through MDC (Model Design Construction)
All comments most welcome.

Question

I really admire your talent and could not do this to save my life, but is there something a little off here?

Thank you for your replies.

I welcome the criticism, especially when it's constructive rather than just rude.

I have posted another image of Immelmann form a similar angle to the picture I posted. I was pleased also to find a side on view of him in my refferences which is rare and shows he has a distinctive nose.

To me, his lips look full as the picture, but I think the mouth is a little to wide? Also, his face seems a bit fuller then the pictures of him, a little heavier? not the thin war weary features coming through to me.

Eyes seem to "cat like?" he has very nice full eyes in the picture, very handsome man he was.

I also do not feel the painted one does your Gray one justice. Maybe that is the biggest issue in judging the details.

I am not an art critic by any means but I think it is fair to "second" the opinion expressed about Max's cheeks which seem to be fuller than the photos and make him look older. (If he had survived the war I could believe that this would be he with more weight some years later!). Also the moustache seems fuller in sculpture compared to the juvenile "smudge" on his upper lip in the photo.

The narrowed eyes also give him a more seasoned look, as though he is squinting into the sun, which conveys a different mood than the boy gazing into the camera with eyes wide open.

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the reason for accentuating the features mentioned. If one were to give me a police rendering of what a "missing" Max would look like 10 years later, I could be convinced this is the same man!
I'll stop here. I've noticed that I myself look "fuller" in photos (esp. b/w) than in real life, so it is difficult to judge by photo! Perspective is everything, no?

I don't care much for the face, for some of the previously stated reasons. The rest of the bust is lovely. Nice form, great details.

If the face could be 'lightened', or thinned out a bit, it might better resemble the man. Perhaps the cheek folds are a mite too deep.

Having said this, I must say that the whole thing is far beyond my sculpting skills, and I daresay most of those posting so rudely.

I see your point, and will allow this revision: 'anyone posting so rudely'.
