Fokker Triplane-Imrie

I just recently acquired the OOP Fokker Triplane book authored by Alex Imrie, and I must say it is indeed a grand reference on the Dr.I. A bit hard to find (at a reasonable price), but I got one nonetheless. Chock full of great photos, and will serve me well as inspiration when I tackle the Roden kit.

This is truly the best resource on the Dr.I's. I consider this to be the bible on the triplane. As a additional note, Alex did a article in C&C I Vol.23 No.2 (1992) "Fokker Triplane-ology". This is research that he wasn't able to include in the book. It was this article that Alex included a tracing of a piece of fabric from MvR's plane 425\17 (IWM). It was the work number from the starboard air intake.

This was a key piece to my research in finding out the true color and markings of 425\17. I had contacted the IWM looking for this piece. They had no record of this fabric. I insisted that it was there and that Alex had made a tracing of it some twenty years ago.

Three months later I got a email from one of the curators there letting me know that they had done a internal investigation to locate this item. They were able to locate this piece along with to other pieces of fabric from his plane and that they have been catalog and a invitation was handed to me to examine the piece.

Since was unable to go there my group of fellow researchers were able to send a friend (DR) from the UK to examine this piece. We got a full report of his visit with lots of photos and to our surprise some paint chips that had flaked off due it it being very dry. They agreed to supply some of them to be examined by Alan Toelle. We are still awaiting the analysis from Alan And hopefully he can publish his findings as I know this will answer some of the mystery of how his plane was painted.

You've got a real treasure there, Fokker Boy (I've got two of 'em! )

Take good care of it. It's likely the last book Alex will ever write, sadly. He's just a bit too long in the tooth to finish his much-anticipated D.VII book.

I’m very sorry to hear about the unfinished book on the D.VII, as I just can’t seem to get enough of that plane! Incidentally, at last count, I have twenty five of the Osprey WWI aces/unit books!

Hi Kevin,
I also have that book (mine dated 1994) and it is a classic, by a master historian of aeroplanes. Paul Leaman is also no slouch where the Triplane is concerned.

Dave.

I LOVE mine, I got it shortly after it was published at book shop at Wright-Patterson AF museum. It served me well when built the DML Dr.I
