Question Major R.S. Dallas query

G'day All!
I have just been reading Alex Revell's book from 1978 "British Fighter Units Western Front 1917-18" that I managed to pick up second hand through an Amazon seller in the US.

I am intrigued by his comment on page 35 which is above a pic of Dallas in the camoflaged SE5a "Maj R S Dallas, CO of No.40 Squadron-------. Although officially credited with 39 victories, an evalution of the claims made by Dallas show a total of 56".

Now my question is what does this really mean?
Did Dallas overclaim or were there no confirmations of the other claims?
Has anyone on the Forum done a comparison of his claims against German Losses?
Does anyone have any ideas etc on this matter?

Thanks in advance for any info forthcoming.

P.S. Maybe Alex would be kind enough to elaborate on this matter?
