SE5a oil study ...

The oil study is finished - I had to let the whole thing dry for a while before I added the wing bracing wires. I'm currently laying down the underpainting on the larger 20 x 48" version ...

The Yielding Sky
(oil study for a larger work)
10 x 24 in., oil on linen

Nice work Wade Great atmosphere , you get a reall sense of how chilly it was flying at that height and can see why these pilots had to get so wrapped up.
Looking forward to seeing the big one.

Above the clouds

Yes, an impressive painting that captures the feeling of cold and the potential menace of an empty sky. I think it would be improved by including more cloud cover in the lower foreground.

Thanks! While my usual fare consists of Mustangs and Flying Fortresses and all that "Alternative Great War" sort of thing, I've been planning this one for ages! The large canvas will be my showpiece at our (Russell Smith, me, + four other artists) art show later this year at the Mighty 8th AF Museum near Savannah.

Agreed. In fact, the original 'cloud deck' photo of mine shows a distinct bank of clouds in the foreground - taking up roughly the lower third of the undercast you see. While they sort of blend together in the photo - and in my painting above - I have planned on a slight temperature shift to separate the two masses. I also will modify somewhat the mass horizontal lines to create a little more interest and to keep the eye moving in the frame. This study was mainly done to see if I could pull off the complex SE!

It looks like you definetly achieved pulling off the complex S.E.5a!

The underpainting is complete on the 20 x 48 in. stretched linen. The three aircraft were underpainted in Raw Umber - these will serve as tonal "foundations" for the color layers to follow. For a sort of duotone effect (to trick my eye that we're actually making progress!), I washed in the background using Burnt Sienna ...

Wow!

WOW! I can say I have no patience for oils. I can't wait that long for drying to keep moving on, but oil paintings are some of my favorite pieces (too look at)

Just beautiful!
