Enamel or GunMetal finish????

Guys and Gals,
Am I misremembering or what? I thought I had read somewhere the Lewis MG had a black enameled finish. But looking through my references for the Lewis gun I can't tell if they were enamel or gun metal finished. Can someone please tell me which it is? Thanks in advance.
Regards,

i think both gary, but it was not gunmetal like the dark grey blued/black gunmetal on the spandaus. lewis and vickers were more like humbrol #53 gunmetal like a grey/steel color. but i'm pretty sure some were black enamel too.

Well, Scot, if you must drink, Guiness is the way to go.
I'm really interested in this. I was always under the impression Lewis's were gunmetal, but I could see how it could be both. The British were really fond of Japanning everything metal. It was a heavy black lacquer. Enamel probably couldn't withstand the heat, but lacquer might.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Guy's,

For what it's worth I have seen quite a few Lewis guns and I have never seen one with any black paint of any kind on it.

Metal parts blued or blacked (chemically) like any other gun. Some Drum magazines SEEM to be in white, bare metal but that may just be excessive usage---I firmly believe most would be chemically treated. SOME barrels (the stripped ones_ are bright metal, but some I have seen are Blued.

The ONLY part I have seen regularly (I would almost say invariably) painted is the cooling jacket, and they are mostly Green but some were obviously, as can be seen on photos., painted a lighter colour----in the same way some Vickers were.

Cheers,
Dave. EDIT--I should add some jackets appear to be blued/blacked also...

Thank you for the great pics, Womenfly2. That Lewis is most definately blued. Now I don't have to rip all the guns off my models and repaint them. What a relief. I think I'll have a Guiness.
