Ladies and Gentlemen:
I have been ask to write a regular column for WW1 Aero. I was wondering if any of you had some thing you would like answers to or a subject you would like to read more about.

Hi Dan,
I'd love to see histories or pieces on some of the FA and FA(A) units.
Cheers,

Arrow I'd like to get more information about ...

... observation balloons of WW1 (Allied and Central Powers)!

These columns could cover:

--- the types of used balloons (incl. further developments of the types)
--- tech. data (drawings, lifting capacities, etc.)
--- the used motor winches (engine manufacturer, carriage, lorries, etc.)
--- communication and camera equiment
--- preparing a balloon for a mission (ot dismantling it afterwards)
--- different methods how to direct artillery
--- anti-aircraft weapons used for protecting the balloon
--- organsiation of a balloon unit (equipment, personel) and chain of command
--- numbers and losses of the various balloon units
--- tactics (height, how close to the frontline, weather conditions)
--- other things (repairing balloons, balloon sheds, replacements)

It seems that this could cover more than just one column.

.

Column

I'm sure anything you want to write about is OK with us Dan-San. It would be interesting to have a series on experimental and prototype aircraft machines................John

What is WWI Aero?

Where aircraft used to parachute spies/saboteurs behind the lines as in WWII?

Short Story.

Hi Felix:
World War 1 Aero is a journal that was originally was a place where aircraft builders could exchange information and had a sale/ parts wanted section where WW1 aircraft builders could find hard to get parts exchange. It grew over time into a first class historical WW1 aviation journal.
Now the short story
Paul Winslow and Andy Anderson were in the "War Birds" group that were trained in England and served in RFC/RAF Squadroons in France. Paul served with 56 Squadron and Andy served with 40 Squadron, both flying S.E.5a aircraft.
Andy was shot down and captured, towards the end of the war he escaped the POW Camp and made his way into Switzerland.
While Andy was with 40 Squadron a French Breguet flew into 40 Squadron Airfield, the "French crew" had lunch with 40 Squadron pilots, chatted and exchange stories, etc. Later the crew took off in their Breguet 14 and flew off.
After the war when Andy and Paul got back together, (Paul married Andy's sister Ruth in Hawaii, Andy's parent's owned the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu.) Andy told Paul about the Breguet 14 crew visiting him at 40 Squadron. Paul said the same guys visited them. Paul was shocked when Andy told him the German officer who interrogated him after he was captured, was the "French observer" who he met on their visit to 40 Squadron.
Apparently this Breguet 14 with the two German spies flew into quite a few RFC/RAF airfields collecting information, to aid in interrogating POWs.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Dan,
How about a series based upon your interviews with WWI pilots?
