WWI Markings....hand painted or stenciled??

Thanks to reference photos from forum members Ron San and Raineranton (very appreciated) I am about to changed the colour and markings on my 1/4 scale Albatros DVa. See below.

The new scheme will be the black night / white stars fuselage of Karl Kallmunzer when posted to Jasta 78b.

On studying the the photograghs I believe the white stars may have been hand painted over the black fuselage, rather than the fuselage being first painted white then the black overcoated.

I have seen proof that serail numbers etc were stenciled on Albatros fins but I am now not sure whether all markings were stenciled or hand painted.

Can anyone offer their thoughts and/or proof of the use of a particular technique?

Thanks for helping
