RNAS Early Color Formula
I am getting close to needing "paint" for my project. It will be done in a somewhat fanciful RNAS 3 squadron scheme.
I may have missed it, but I read every entry of the old closed PC-10 threads (including the "misconception" one, or whatever it was) without seeing it, and want to know if anyone has the formula for the original RNAS dark color?
In order to prevent incessant bickering on this thread, a few requests -
1. I would like to know what the mix is, or a fairly close FS number.
2. NO opinions please. I really only want details.
3. No undocumented statements/claims please. There is enough data to confirm that the RNAS color WAS different from PC-10.
4. I have the formulas for PC-10 that were posted, so no one needs to relist them.
Okay, with that, and the Christmas Spirit in mind, anyone willing to share what you have?

Bruce Robertson.
Hi RAF_56Ball;
According to Bruce Robertson, who, I imagine has forgotten more than the rest knows about RFC/RAF Camouflage, said, Strangely, the RNAS favoured PC12 which was a camouflage more suited to land than sea, .... A quote from Bombing Colours, Part 2, Airfix Magazine, May 1969, page 407. PC12 is Chocolate brown according to Bruce Robertson. ( Me Too) Les Rogers, in his monumental book, British Aviation Squadron Markings of World War I, page 18, defines P.C.12 a red-brown colour.
Humbrol has matt Dark Earth, HU1029.
Vallejo has Chocolate Brown, VJ70872.
TAMIYA has, Flat Earth, XF-52.
Hope this is of help. These paints are available from SQUADRON.
Merry Christmas RAF_56Ball,
Dan-San

Although I expected a different set of details, this is exactly what I hoped for re: specifics. As always, well versed.
And a blessed Merry Christmas to you, too, Dan-San.

I like your motto.
RAF56_Ball:
A little story about one night in WW2 when I was at loose ends.
I was walking around the camp, at loose ends, when I walked past the Base Library, I went in and walked about the stacks, and I picked out a book, titled, Magnificant Obsessions. I can't rember the author's name, I do know it and an hour or so it'll remember his name.I stood there reading the book, and the lights blinked, and the librarian said closing time. Well I got a library card and took book and went the barracks and continued to read. At ten the barracks lights went out, I went into the latrine and continued to read the book. I could not set it down. At 5:00am, I finished the book, in time for reveille. The book took up a great deal of my toughts, and I realized the greatest gift, is the gift given anonmously.
Merry Christmas Glen,
Dan-San
P.S. Lloyd C.Douglas was the author.

Obsession
Thank you Dan-San, very encouraging.
You might also enjoy an simple made for TV movie called "Secret Santa" done in 2003 with Jennie Garth. Touching a life just for the gift of it instead of the recognition really does cause one to grow, doesn't it?

I remember reading over a Windsock data Special on Camel Squdron Markings and it refernced PC12 as a common RNAS Color as well as Black Painted Cowls and metal coverings. BUT I AM NO Expert either so ? Sorry that dosent help.
Yours Mike

P.c.12?
Hi Jan:
The Methuen for P.C.12 is 8E8, oxide red. It is a damn good match to the color on the Bristol MC1. While we are at it P.C.10 is 5F6.
Happy New Year Jan,
Dan-San

Does this look close?
Dan-San,
If you would look at this. It is a modified version of someone elses work (Harry Dempsey, published in Sopwith Pup Aces of World War 1 by Norman Franks). In general terms, realizing monitors vary, and if I use the MC-1 as a baseline, is this more like weathered PC-12 than PC-10? If like PC-12, should it be more red?

Thanks, Dan-San
